Long Run, Stevia Packets, Mellow Mushroom

Hello! Sunday already??? Can it be true? Sigh. It has been a wonderful weekend around here. Josh and I crashed early last night and got lots of sleep. I got up early this morning and was out the door by 6:50 for my planned 8 mile run. I took it easy and enjoyed the beautiful weather (it was about 68 degrees). In the end, I ran 8.6 miles:

Question for all you runners out there, at what mileage did you start adding in fuel like shot bloks? I am thinking for anything 10 miles and over I will want to start adding these supplements in around mile 7. Let me know! Also, what do you use for chaffing? Do you just use Vaseline or do you buy a specialty product?

After getting in lots of water and a little refueling (I'm never real hungry right away after long runs), I got into some coffee! I tried the NuNaturals stevia packets in my coffee and REALLY enjoyed it. This stevia doesn’t have the funky after taste of Truvia.
Also, the cookies from the other day are tasty. However, the baking mix does seem to have a slight after taste. I think I will use the stevia packets on a more regular basis, but will use the baking mix selectively.
My Aunt and Uncle came down for lunch today:

Josh and I took them out to the Mellow Mushroom in Mount Pleasant for some good food and to watch the start of the Eagles game:

Love the funky decorations in Mellow:

And the GIANT mushroom in the middle of the restaurant:

I did the build your own salad (feta (I removed about half of this haha), romaine, broccoli, peppers, cucumber, tomatoes):

Josh got a pizza with prosciutto and artichokes:

My Aunt got a BLT with sprouts:

My Uncle got a meatball sub:

Fabulous lunch! My Aunt and Uncle are so much fun. For the rest of the afternoon, I plan to watch lots of football and I have some work work to do and more choreography to learn. I also may try to sneak out to have coffee with a friend. What are you up to?

What a cute dining spot!

Good luck with the new choreography and enjoy what's left of the weekend! :)

I have blood sugar issues so I have been known to eat some clif shot blocks for anything over 7 miles...

Body glide for chafing. I suppose vasaline would work but it's messy. Body glide comes in a deodorant stick container

Great job on the run!! I love how your aunt is holding up her food so you can photograph it :) That looks like a feta with lettuce salad not vice versa!

That restaurant looks adorable! And holy feta. It looks like they dumped the whole box on there :)

I am interested to see what people say in terms of the energy boosters during running. I signed up for a half marathon next year, so it will be to hear what people think.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

you and the fam are too cute! for anything 10 and up, i usually use shot bloks. like if i am running 10 miles, i usually pop a couple at mile 8. i have never had huge chafing issues (thank the Lord!) but i do hear nuskin is fabulous!

I run, but my dr. limits my runs...so no long distance for me! Glad you had a fun lunch out. We are watching football!

oh my gosh I hate it and love it when you post your restaurant meals. I want half of each of those subs please, and I'll eat the other half of your feta. LOL
(I just got back from the gym and am starving)

way go to on your run girl thats fantastic! :)

As for refueling and the chaffing, i haven't really experimented with shot blocks or anything or felt that i needed them just yet, and as for chaffing, i haven't had many issues there either. yikes i'm sorry i'm no help

OMG that BLT is crazy!! Great run :-) I started to fuel at about 10 miles or so. Usually by the end of 9 or 10 miles I'm dead, so if I want to go longer I'll eat fuel at about mile 5 or 6.

What an awesome weekend! I put together furniture and went to the park today. Tonight it's just relaxing!

Awwh! Cutest pic of you and Josh ever :)
I've heard wonderful things abt that place. There's one in Austin I think.
Nice run honey! That weather sounds bootiful! It hit 39 degrees here today. No idea what that is about!

Congrats on the kick butt run! That's awesome.

I usually find that I need the shots on a long run that is 10 miles or more. I try to take one before I think I need it though (around mile 6 or 7), that way, it kicks in right when I need it. I think that is key, not to wait until your energy runs out, but rather before, so that way, you never let yourself drop too low.

Great lunch. You all look like you really enjoyed the day together.

Have a great end to your weekend sweets!

Great job on the run!

As for long run fuel, I usually only bring Gu's with me if I'm doing more than 10 miles. I take one ever 45 minutes or so.

Chaffing, definitely Body Glide! Helps so much. Actually I realized after my 20 miler yesterday my Fuel Belt was rubbing on my back, of course I didn't discover that till I got in the shower.... so painful!

Looks like you had a great time out with the family.

I keep wanting to try Stevia but it is not easy to get hold of here.

I start adding fuel in when I do anything over 10 miles, but honestly I go by the way my body feels. Somtimes I need it and sometimes I don't

Also I agree with everyone else, go with body glide. Vaseline is water based and you will sweat it right off.

I used to chaf all the time in basketball and volleyball. My coach got me a pair of tight spandex shorts to wear underneath my uniforms and I never once chaffed again!!

What a fun time with your aunt and uncle. I love family outings! :-)

That "build your own salad" looks like a head of cauliflower. And yes, you know I'll take the pizza...any pizza.

Krista said...

That BLT that your Aunt got looks SO good!!!

Great run, too!

Holly said...

Dang - would you like some lettuce to go with that cheese?! :-)

When I did long runs I'd usually take sports beans or the Blocks after 9 or 10 miles...but it kind of depends how long I'm running when I take them. Like if I ran 10, I might take them around mile 6. Or if I did 13, I might take them around mile 7. You just want to take them BEFORE you crash!

Surprisingly I've never had chafing problems...but I've heard Body Glide is good? (Think you can get it at running stores..)

haha that is an intense amount of feta!

I recommend taking some sort of carbohyrate rich drink or snack if you will be doing more than 1 hour of cardio. This is when your glycogen stores are depleted. I personally find that gatorade or other cho-rich drinks are better absorbed than the goos, bars, etc b/c they have other macronutrients that slow down the digestion and do not allow for proper hydration unless you take the proper amount of water with it. Hope that helps!

what a fun lunch! i'm glad you had a good weekend, if only it would last longer!

Therese said...

That is a crap ton of feta lol! I still have yet to eat at a Mellow Mushroom. There was one near my college and a couple in Orlando I think. I need to change this!

you are a huge inspiration...way to run over 8 miles lady!!

Bec said...

Great run girly! Glad you had a fun time at lunch with your aunt and uncle:)

Unknown said...

holy feta!! I had a friend in college and she would seriously eat a container of feta on her salads it was quite interesting, but hey to each his own right?! sounds like you had a fab time with your aunt and uncle and you are so pretty!!!

CONGRATS on your long run! I'm kind of a pansy and get hungry after stepping a foot out the door (hehe) so I usually pop a Gu in if I'm going to run over 6 miles and eat them around 4.5 miles.

Your aunt looks SO much like you!

P.S. I have the same Stevia products, too. I haven't tried the baking mix yet, but I found the vanilla drops to have a pretty bad aftertaste, too.

I usually start thinking about eating during runs when they get over half marathon distance. I think it's more a function of time than distance: I used to do it for 10-milers, but as I've gotten faster it doesn't take as long to finish and I don't need the fuel.

But I think starting early and eating gradually is good... in a marathon, for example, I start eating after 2-3 miles.

Nice job on the run!
